In February 1937, a month of heavy rain (19 inches) became remembered as the Great Flood of 37. The flood submerged about 70% of the city and 175,000 residents were evacuated. To help protect this from happening again, Louisville is now protected by flood walls.
Today, Louisville is a part of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and The Flood-Disaster Protection Act of 1973 and the National Flood Insurance Reform Act of 1994 made purchasing flood insurance mandatory for federally backed mortgages on buildings located in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).
